Leverage ⊩
Don’t forget, you need some leverage when starting up on a bicycle. It’s how you get the bike moving, and keep it upright!
This afternoon, I was just starting up at a stop sign; and over I went. I think I didn’t get my starting foot up high enough; and that meant I couldn’t apply much leverage to the pedal. I think I also had my front wheel cut a little too much to the right.
Oh, well. These things happen now and then; and usually aren’t catastrophic. I don’t even find them embarrassing. When I first switched to two wheels from the adult trike, I made up my mind not to let the occasional spill make me feel foolish. After all, even pro tour riders have crashes!
Not Princess Aurora 👑
I forgot to swap spindles, too; even though, as I’m not Princess Aurora, I don’t have to worry about avoiding the things!
Yesterday, between high winds and the threat of severe weather, I hooked the road bike into the trainer for some lazy indoor pedaling. That meant changing the rear wheel’s spindle. When I took the bike out of the trainer, I forgot to switch spindles again.
As I rode this afternoon, I noticed that the bike felt funny; and I was worried that my fall might have knocked a wheel out of true. Only several hours after I got back home, did I remember that I hadn’t put the regular spindle back in place. How could I have forgotten? I’m not Princess Aurora, who had to avoid spindles like the plague.
By tomorrow, the wind should be calmer; and riding will be more pleasant. If the bike still feels funny, I’ll let the shop have look at it. Just don’t forget about proper leverage when starting!

ABOUT ME
I began this website primarily as a way to present the story of how I accomplished a century ride on an adult tricycle. Other riders of adult trikes might want to know whether it’s possible. It sure is! You can read all about it in My Story.
I live in New Orleans; and retired in January 2023. More time for cycling!
