Finally Got Out

Finally Got Out! 🚲 Today’s Featured Product! 🔥 Pro Bike Tool Inflator New!! Fuel Your Body For our full list of products, visit the SpokEasy Store! I finally got out for a ride this morning; albeit a short one. It felt good to be pedaling after sitting around all day yesterday! I didn’t try any efforts at riding fast. The park isn’t the place for it; but I wanted to stay rather close to  home in case a T-storm started to move in. It makes me wish for clear skies and an open road; although I can do without climbing mountains! Memorial Day 🌼 🇺🇸 It looks like our Memorial Day holiday will be a wet one; and I don’t envy people who have picnics and barbecues planned. But BBQ really isn’t my thing; so at least I’m not worried about outdoor cooking plans being thwarted. I hope I can ride tomorrow; I need the exercise. But it looks like the entire week will be stormy! I finally got out to the grocery store this afternoon. Yesterday morning I started over there, because I skipped the salvage store; but grumbling thunder made me change my mind. I hope no such rumbling derails tomorrow’s ride plans! Cycling Moms

Cycling Moms 👩 Today’s Featured Product! ✨ Allen Deluxe Trailer & Stroller New!! Blue Quartz Hydration Backpack For our full list of products, visit the SpokEasy Store! To cycling moms — and all mothers — Happy Mothers’ Day! There are quite a few ways to being along youngsters on a ride; from trailer/strollers for very young children, to trailercycles that let an older kid ride along without fear of separation. Never having had children, I can’t vouch for how well these things really work; but I’m sure there are plenty of parents who have tried them out; cycling moms and cycling dads as well. Twenty at Last! 🚧 Today my mileage hit 20 at last; for a change, there was no virtual road block in the form of bad weather. I had a frustrating three days of cutting rides short; and I was glad to get in some real distance. I saw rabbits again today! A ride of 20 miles gives me quite a lot of time to watch for wildlife; and to listen for bird calls.  And watch the sky. It looks like this week won’t be as stormy as last week; so I can keep on putting in the miles. And cycling moms are probably glad of it, too. The little ones won’t need a raincoat! Shorts Circuit

Shorts Circuit 🩳 Today’s Featured Product! VELMIA Spoke  Reflectors   New!! Biosteel Zero Mix For our full list of products, visit the SpokEasy Store! My shorts circuit has been interrupted. For a long time, I’ve had five pairs that I use in rotation. Today, I noticed that the pair of shorts I was wearing had holes in it! Thank the velcro on my reflective vest for that! It’s heavy-duty; and tears at whatever it snags. Now that my shorts circuit has been broken, I need another pair of shorts. Crazy Weather 🌥️ We’ve got crazy weather again.  At around 8:00 am, it was cloudy; and I knew the forecast said there might be T-storms. So I was a bit uneasy about going for a ride. I decided to go do laps around the park. For a while, it seemed that the sun would come out; but during Lap 2, I noticed that the clouds seemed to be getting darker. I went home; and soon discovered that there was a Special Marine Warning for the lake not far away. The weather system was heading this way, too. Not much later, I began to hear grumbles of thunder;  and I expected all fury to break out. But it didn’t. This crazy weather is driving me crazy! Leave a Reply Cancel Reply Logged in as CAL. Hang Eleven?

Hang Eleven? 🏄 Today’s Featured Product! MOPHOTO Adult Mountain Tricycle New!! Bikewa Men’s Rain Jacket For our full list of products, visit the SpokEasy Store! Hang eleven sounds almost like a surfing term; only they hang ten. I had a surfing-crazy spell when I was about twelve; but I don’t know how I got that idea. There wasn’t an ocean anywhere near our neighborhood! This morning I tried to hang to 11 mph; with only middling success. I kept forgetting to keep an eye on my Cateye; and kept slowing down. Thus I didn’t hang eleven very well. Don’t Speed! ⏩ Don”t speed in fog, they say; especially if you’re driving a motor vehicle. Some years ago, there was a horrible chain collision one very foggy morning; and I think they said that speed was a factor. Riding in dense fog is a bit of a nail-biter; especially if I’m doing hard efforts. Now that I have anti-fog wipes for my glasses, I can at least see better when it’s misty. My plan for tomorrow is a 22-mile ride; but I think I’ll omit hard efforts. If I happen to hang eleven, fine. If I don’t, no big deal. The ride is the main thing! What to Do?

What to Do? ⁉️ Today’s Featured Product! Avasta Govet New!! Women’s PRO Barrier Jacket For our full list of products, visit the SpokEasy Store! Do you wonder what to do when you don’t have a bike handy? It’s hard to sit around when you’re used to acticivity! I couldn’t even check the news online because my browsers wouldn’t respond. That  happens sometimes, for some reason or another; and it  makes me realize how much I take the Internet for granted. I finally gave up on it; and went to sweep out front. I was wondering what to do; and here was something to be done! The kitchen was off-limits for the time being; there was already soup cooling on the stove. I got my hybrid back this afternoon; and for my next ride I’ll try pushing the pace. Not the 3-minute hard efforts I’ve been doing; just working to ride 1-2 mph faster than ususal for longer intervals. Intervals 📏 I guess intervals are  a way to measure your progress: if you can do them faster than you could a few weeks earlier, you’re likely getting stronger. The catch here is, speed isn’t an absolute measure. What if you’re fighting a strong headwind? That’s apt to slow you down. A power meter would tell me for sure whether I’m getting stronger; but I’ve never trained seriously enough to make the cost of one worthwhile. I did in fact consider a power meter once; and before I could buy it, up came the need for oral surgery! So I’ll continue to ride as usual; and I don’t need a power meter for that. First Long Ride!

First Long Ride! 🚴‍♀️   Today I did my first long ride in over four months. That is, if 20 miles can really be called “long”. But I was getting impatient with 10- or 12-mile jaunts; and I decided it was time to push for bigger distances. Maybe this morning wasn’t the best time, though. The wind was fairly strong; but for once most of the headwind trouble was on the outward-bound part of the ride. So my first long ride in months was a tough one; but I need to get back to my usual mileage — even if I don’t have a new road bike yet. And, I’ve started to get myself used to wearing a Camel-Bak again. Camel-Bak 🐪 I’m easing back into the Camel-Bak a little at a time. Today I filled the reservoir only halfway; and I didn’t put anything in the pockets. Normally, I’m carrying about 100 ounces of water ( i.e. the full reservoir); a cable lock; cell phone; and a tube of Chamois Butt’r! The plan for tomorrow is a short-ish ride; just to the salvage store and back. I’m not ready for daily 20-mile rides yet. The wind won’t be as strong as it was today; and no rain is expected for several days. Maybe further two-wheeled outings won’t be quite as tough as my first long ride. All for Nothing?

All for Nothing? 🫙 You know how sometimes your concerns turn out to be all for nothing? It’s so annoying, and can result in wasted time; especially when you learn that it’s been a false alarm. Early this afternoon the temperature finally rose to the low 40s; and the wind almost died down. I decided to go ride some laps around the park. During the second lap; my bicycle suddenly began to feel weird. I seemed hard to steer; especially when I rode one-handed to grab a sip of water. Had the headset gone loose? I cut the ride short so I could roll the bike over to the shop — and it was all for nothing.   False Alarm 🧯 A loose headset actually seemed unlikely, as it was just tightened very recently. But when you’re riding, you don’t want your steering to fail. I finished my ride by walking the bike for the final half-mile. If the steering had gone wonky, I didn’t want to ride next to possible street traffic. After I got out of my cycling clothes, I rolled the bike over to the shop. As it turned out, both the headset and the wheels were fine. Have my arms gone wonky? I’m glad the bicycle is OK. I want to run errands over the next few days, before the next Arctic blast arrives. Late this week, low temperature will drop back down to the mid-20s. How nice if that forecast were a false alarm! Still Blue

Still Blue 🔵 “Old Muddy” looking blue The Mississippi is still blue — sort of. It didn’t have quite the same bluish-green appearance as yesterday; but it was still blue. I wish I had thought to take a picture of it then. Today I didn’t work on my pace; I simply rode. It’s not wise to do hard work every single day; from what I’ve read, not even pro cyclists do that kind of training. I do need to put my attention on building up, though; even if I skip RAGBRAI this year. Building Up 🛠️ I’m continuing to work at building up. My daily distances are still only 8-11 miles; but at least once a week, I include hard efforts.  I need that to regain my leg strength! I’m starting to think about long Sunday rides again. Would it be too much, too soon if I pushed for an 18-mile ride? I can do 10 miles or so without trouble; so 18 miles should be quite doable. If I ride at a moderate pace, that is! How soon can I get back on a road bike? Today I tried a few knees-on-the-floor push-ups; and they still make my left arm ache a bit around the elbow. So maybe I’m not quite ready for the road bike; but I hope I will be soon. Keep My Cool

Keep My Cool 🆒 I need a way to keep my cool while pedaling an indoor bike; and the Arctic Air fan does a good job. This wearable fan has three speeds; and is lightweight and portable. One charge provides up to six hours’ operation. Yesterday I forgot to take the Arctic Air with me; and I got hot while exercising, sitting down and not moving forward. Between that, and problems with the left pedal, I stopped the ride early; but today I did 35 minutes. It’s hard to keep my cool when the temperatures outdoors still don’t feel like Fall! It’s 80 degrees as I type this; and it’s going to stay warm for at least a few more days. Rain chances are increasing, though; and even in hot weather, that can mean not-so-warm showers. That’s one way to cool off! Not-so-warm Showers?🌧️ Not meaning to make fun of Warm Showers; but we can get not-so-warm showers on the hottest days. In fact, the rain in a T-storm can feel very cold. That’s one way to keep my cool; but I don’t enjoy getting caught in a T-storm on my bike. I hope it doesn’t rain tomorrow while I’m between home and physical therapy. Oh, well. Even if I get caught in some not-so-warm showers, I won’t be wet at work all day! Erratic

Erratic ⧘ You know what a nail-biter it is when an erratic, wobbly rider is close to you. Sure, everyone can learn to ride a bike; but holding a steady line takes quite a lot of practice! When my elbow is all healed and I can ride again, I’m going to have to relearn that; and hope my line isn’t too erratic. Speaking of erratic, Melissa has reached hurricane strength since morning; and changed direction yet again. Now she’s heading West. Her forward motion is still very slow; and that’s not good news. If she keeps that line, poor Central America will take a hard hit. Wet! 🌧️ It looks like we’ll have wet weather tonight and tomorrow. I should have gone for a walk today; if it’s raining tomorrow, I’ll need to stay in so I don’t get my splint wet. I can’t count on rain gear to keep me dry. It’s rather odd how riding through a drenching rain doesn’t reduce the need for hydration, even in cold weather. I’ve got to have that Camel-Bak, no matter what the conditions. When I can ride again, I’ll have to re-learn having that weight on my back! I hope it won’t make my line erratic.  This blog/page may contain affiliate links. “We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.” ABOUT ME I began this website primarily as a way to present the story of how I accomplished a century ride on an adult tricycle.
