I Broke 30! ⛓️💥
I broke 30 miles on my long ride today! The ride seemed rather hard, because I was on the hybrid; and that bike is much heavier than the road bike. But at least I did the distance.
Now I need to start increasing the long-ride distance by a few miles per week. At least one YouTube that I watched about RAGBRAI prep says, work up to the average daily distance for your weekly long ride. If you can, and wish, to do more, more power to you. This year’s daily average RAGBRAI mileage is 58 miles; so even though I broke 30 today, I’ve got a ways to go.
I have about 16 weeks to increase that mileage; so if I add two miles per week, I can get there. But if I’m lengthening my weekly long ride, do I really need to make all of my weekday rides longer? It might be better to leave most of them at 18-20 miles (or shorter); and use them for working on my pace and strength. I want to improve my strength for climbing; but I also want to avoid burnout!
Burnout 🧨
Burnout, by all accounts, is ugly. I don’t think that GU-Gel Campfire S’mores would help much once burnout sets in; and if it does, you’re unlikely to go out with a bang.
Many cyclists feel that they can’t get enough riding; but be careful not to let that enthusiasm push you into overwork or worse. Yes, I’m glad I broke 30; but I plan a shorter ride for tomorrow; and little or none for the next day. As a mileage hog, it’s hard for me to skip riding; but I need a break once a week!

ABOUT ME
I began this website primarily as a way to present the story of how I accomplished a century ride on an adult tricycle. Other riders of adult trikes might want to know whether it’s possible. It sure is! You can read all about it in My Story.
I live in New Orleans; and retired in January 2023. More time for cycling!
