They Were Smart ⛵️ They were smart, those Vikings; and not only when it comes to seafaring over long distances. Their home heating methods sound ingenious. If had the means to construct my own abode, I think I’d like to have something along those lines. It would be a relief to know I could keep warm without having to rely on the power grid. But oh, the learning curve! Learning Curve ↩️ The learning curve would have me going backwards a lot before I made any progress; I’m sure of that. And for many reasons; going back to such living has many considerations, wood- burning being only one of them. I barely know how to split a length of tree branch into firewood. How do I find such wood to begin with; and when is the best time of year to gather it? How does one store firewood so that it doesn’t become wet and un-burnable? Would I be able to find what my father called fat pine? I would need a hatchet, at least; and I don’t know how to keep one sharp. Dull cutting implements are more dangerous than sharp ones; they’re more likely to slip, and cut you instead of the log. If there were a flue, I’d need to keep up with its maintenance; who needs a chimney fire? I wish I could ask the Vikings; they were smart! Feeling Sheepish?

Feeling Sheepish? Watch at about 08:07 minutes. A bicycle-powered sheep-shearing machine! I think it would be great to run, say, my blender using pedal power. But how long must I pedal in order to whip up a smoothie? Have I got the mechanical skills to hook up that blender in the first place? As for powering my laptop that way: I say, forget it. The motion of pedaling makes it difficult or impossible for me to look steadily at a computer screen; book; or whatever. It’s not like glancing at a cyclocomputer every few minutes! I expect that a bike such as a Schwinn GTX is better for such purposes than a road bike. Or is that just my own vague notion? Even when you’ve got the bike for the job, there’s the question of having the space to set up your human-powered appliance(s). I’m feeling sheepish to admit it, but I “rode” indoors this morning. It didn’t get quite as cold as predicted; but it was still cold. I needed to get in some pedaling, even if it was only 16 minutes. I skipped it yesterday, because my foot seemed to get a bit too much the day before. But maybe tomorrow!

Yes, indeed! This trail spans more than 2000 miles, running through fourteen states from Maine to Georgia. This is not an adventure to be undertaken lightly; especially if you’re aiming for more than a single day’s riding. Parts of the AT are quite rugged. Hazardous weather is a possibility; Summer can see strong T-storms; and cold weather can bring snow and ice, making riding much more difficult. Packing for this adventure seems to be quite a challenge. You want the right stuff, but don’t need to be weighed down with things you won’t really need. To begin with, how about the bike? Is a touring bicycle best? If you’re going to spend nights along the trail, will you need a tent? A sleeping bag? Bessport Camping Tent Sun Ridge Sleeping Bag We visited Great Smoky Mountains when I was a kid. I remember them as being quite wet; a waterproof tarp to put under your tent wouldn’t be a bad idea. Neither would a poncho. And a first aid kit … there we go, getting overloaded already! Naturally there’s more than the Appalachian Trail to cycling in North Carolina. These routes range from the easy Neuse River Loop from Mini City, to the expert Roadbike Loop from Brevard. So many trails, and so little time to ride them!
