How to Time It?

How to Time It? ⌚️ How to time it over the next few days? We’ve got cold temperatures and stiff winds in the forecast for much of this week; and it looks like tomorrow will be especially blustery. I don’t want to skip too many days of riding; so how to time it to minimize my time spent struggling against the wind? Pedaling round and round the park means less headwind trouble than riding on top of the levee; but the tedium of doing laps makes it hard to get in the desired mileage.  I’m not a big fan of afternoon riding; probably because I spent years riding early in the day. Before I retired, that was the best way to be sure I did get to ride; but now I’m not as pressed for time as I was then. And for the time being, I sure don’t need to worry about excessive heat! Slow Start ? Actually, 2025 is getting off to a slow start. Today I rode fewer than 10 miles; and my legs felt tired besides. Do they need a lube job? I need to decide how to time it for my rides during the week. During the final months of 2024, I was working to bring my long-term mileage total to 70K; and rarely skipped a day. But now that I’ve met that goal, I can work out a schedule that lets me take off one day per week. I don’t want to take off too many days, though; and the weather in the coming week will make that hard. In addition, it’s time I started reintroducing intensity; especially if I have any idea of doing RAGBRAI. That will mean climbing! I suppose last year’s suggested training schedule will do for this  year; but before I decide whether to register for the event, I need to know where the start/finish towns will be. I might be able to manage if I go by Amtrak. How’s that for training? ? Tabula Rasa

Tabula Rasa ?  A new year is tabula rasa, a chance to start anew; and of course that includes riding plans! Not that anyone has to coax me to give riding a try. I’ve been cycling for 15+ years now! But it’s still a good time to work up a new training plan; and to consider some new cycling adventures. When the route for RAGBRAI 2025 is finally announced, I’ll be able to figure out whether travel to Iowa by train for the event will be feasible. It’s also tabula rasa as far as my eating habits go. I pretty much let things slide for the week between Christmas and New Year’s; but now I’ve got to get back to work on it. Sometimes it’s a bit of a problem, though, such as when I’m not sure of the nutritional info of a home-made soup. New Ride Food ? ? I’m considering new ride foods, too; and I’m especially looking for things that aren’t too high in saturated fat. It might be more cost-effective to make my own on-bike food; and I was once again looking at some of the recipes in Feed Zone Portables.  I’ve tried rice cakes, and am not at all sure I made them correctly. Mine tend to come out too soft; and that sushi rice gums up my teeth in a most annoying way. And then the rice tends to stick in my throat; something I don’t need while cycling. If I want to try other recipes in Feed Zone Portables, I’ll have to make an expedition to a supermarket for flour; and possibly other ingredients. New ride food can take careful planning; but after all, wasn’t I just talking about tabula rasa? Rev It Up

Rev It Up ?️ Tomorrow I must rev it up again. I skipped the ride today; but in my case, rev it up doesn’t mean hopping aboard any kind of e-bike. In fact, I want to continue relying on muscle power for as long as I can. Now that I’ve met the 70K-mile goal, I think I need to cut the mileage a little; and start doing some intensity work. This should help me to increase my strength; and they say it’s a good way to burn more calories. When you ride at the same old pace all the time, your body’s calorie-burning furnace adapts; and you need to push the pace to increase the calorie burn. That’s especially true if you want to shed a few extra pounds. Two Days Left 2️⃣ Only two days left of 2024! Fast away the old year passes!  And it seems like 2024 just began. Between my two bicycles, I’ve pedaled almost 5000 miles this year. To make it to 5000 miles, I’d need to ride something like 64 miles over the next two days. That’s a little bit much for me at this point; but I can aim for riding 5000 miles in 2025. RAGBRAI is still up in the air for me. Can I get there by train? Would I need a bicycle travel case? I’d better get more diligent about scouting social media for info. There’s got to be something there that’s helpful. As to training, it’s time to rev it up, and work on simulated hills. I’d need climbing legs for RAGBRAI! Sparring?

Sparring? ? Boxing Day sounds like sparring — oh, there I go again, thinking outside of the box. Sorry, bad pun. But if the weather is really foul where you live, you might want to think outside of the box and ride inside. As for this being Boxing Day, I’ve got a number of boxes that I need to get rid of. That’s the problem with online shopping. Now that Christmas is past, I’m working to get my palate back under control. I’m forever sparring with my sweet tooth! And, of course, I’m working at putting in the miles on the bike. I may as well finish the December Winter Wheelers with a strong showing. The Winter Wheelers Challenge actually lasts through January 2025; but soon I think I’ll take a day off from riding. We all need one now and then; and I haven’t taken one for a long time. After all, I’ve been working towards hitting 70K miles by the end of this year. Within Sight! ? That goal is now well within sight. For a couple of days I didn’t ride all that much; but today I knocked out 22 miles. I’ve got only 18 miles and a bit to go! I hope the weather cooperates tomorrow. If only CTRL Protein Meal Bars would let me “ctrl” (aka control) the weather! But they’ll help you to keep the bonk under control. These bars are made of wholesome ingredients; and each one supplies 15 grams of protein. Three flavors available: Peanut Butter S’mores (shown at left); Magic Charms; and Choc Chip Cookie Dough. Momentum

Momentum ?? Whether on a swing or a bicycle, you’ve got to get the momentum going. Maybe these Whole Mayocoba Beans will give you the energy you need for it! I’m working to keep the momentum going for my bicycle rides. Winter Wheelers is still in progress; and my end-of-year mileage goal is within sight. Just under 78 miles to go; or slightly less than nine miles per day. And Christmas won’t be Christmas without a ride! 2025 ? It’s hard to believe that 2025 is almost here; and I hope I can keep the cycling momentum going into the New Year. The Cyclist’s Training Diary is one way to track your ride data; but I use a plain old spiral notebook. Whichever course you take, it’s good to have it all written down in one place.  I need to get busy looking for a way to get to Iowa if I hope to do RAGBRAI 2025. And I need to start switching my rides from merely piling up the miles to doing some real intensity work once or twice a week. I think you can say that I’ve done my base mileage; and that’s what you need as the foundation for working to develop better force and speed. I’ll ride the hybrid tomorrow. I want to hit the supermarket; and besides, my left shoe keeps coming unclipped by itself as I ride the road bike. Worn cleat, I guess. Always something! Every Little Bit

Every Little Bit ? They say that every little bit helps; whether it’s easing goodies out of your diet, or extending your mileage. Or increasing the weight you lift if you do off-bike strength training! Today I added a mile or so to my ride for a total of 23.1 miles. That wasn’t a major increase; but every little bit helps! I wonder, am I ready to add a 30-miler once a week? Today’s ride was quite poky; my average speed was less than 11 mph. I’m not quick as a bunny! Not yet, anyway! But rides of 22-23 miles at a rather casual pace don’t leave me gasping for breath at the end; so going for 30 miles shouldn’t be a major undertaking. RAGBRAI? ? Is RAGBRAI possible? I’m still interested; but I must admit that I seem to have run out of options for getting to and from Iowa with a small group of riders. Traveling there by air will be frightfully costly; and going by Amtrack will mean a long trip in a swaying passenger car. My head doesn’t like that sort of thing! All the same, I’ve bought a few things that I’d need on RAGBRAI. I got an air mattress similar to the HiiPeak Sleeping Pad shown at left; and I got a cooling rag, too. In fact, I tried it out during that extremely hot spell in July/August; and it really helps.  Every little bit helps when you’re aiming for a mileage goal; and maybe I’ll ride to Whole Foods tomorrow. Or shall I wait for Saturday, and skip the salvage store? Surging?

Surging? ? Were my efforts this morning really “surging”? And no, socks don’t make a difference! I’m not training for racing; but this morning I tried a number of 30-second efforts at pushing for 15 mph or so. There was almost no wind, which helped a lot. But I’m not sure that really counted as surging. It looks like wind conditions will be calm for a few more days — hooray! What cyclist doesn’t like windless days? I’d better enjoy it while I can, though. At some point, the constant winds of Winter will set in; and then I’ll be battling headwinds much of the time! Comet? ☄️ Is another comet coming to visit? We heard about the one that last appeared when the Neanderthals were still around. A day or two ago, I saw something in the news about an October 24 comet. It’s supposed to be visible in the eastern sky around sunrise; and possibly even in the daytime! Binoculars would be great to have right now; but I don’t need them nearly often enough to justify my buying .a pair. Celestron Binoculars have a large aperture; great for long-distance viewing. Tripod adapter and carry case included. If I can spot that comet without spyglasses, great! If I can’t, it’s no big deal. It wouldn’t surprise me if more such “dirty snowballs” were discovered in the future; and I might get to see those. Meanwhile, I’ll keep working at surging.   This blog/page may contain affiliate links. “We are a participant in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program, an affiliate advertising program designed to provide a means for us to earn fees by linking to Amazon.com and affiliated sites.” ABOUT ME I began this website primarily as a way to present the story of how I accomplished a century ride on an adult tricycle. One Last Lick

One Last Lick ? Today I just had to get in one last lick before Cycle September ends. A 20-mile ride was a good way to end the month; and I’m delighted that I didn’t miss a single day! This ride was actually almost 0.75 miles longer than I  had intended. On the way home, I had to take a detour because a train was blocking my usual crossing; and I wasn’t going to wait for it to start moving. If I had, I might still be standing there! I tried some “fake hills” during my ride. That means, get into the hardest gear my bike offers; and pedal against that resistance for one minute at a time. I took two-minute breaks of riding an easy gear between efforts. I did three “hills”; and after a 10-minute break of easy pedaling I did another set. Caution: don’t try this if you’re new to cycling. Pushing too hard a gear, too soon, is too hard on the knees; and can even result in injury. Scream? ? Speaking of one last lick, I’m getting into the mood for ice cream. Remember, “I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream”? But I don’t think the drug store carries Rebel. And, the trouble with bringing home a pint of any kind of ice cream, is keeping myself from demolishing it all in one sitting! I’d need to go out and ride another 20 miles or so to burn it off. Still Nervous

Still Nervous ? These hurricanes are giving me headaches! I’m still nervous about Helene. Forecasts continue to show the storm heading for Florida; but there’s time left for it to switch its direction. Maybe some Alter Eco Truffles would calm my jitters. Chocolate is a great comfort food! Another reason for me to be still nervous about that storm, is a medical procedure that I have scheduled for tomorrow afternoon. If Helene goes crazy and begins churning our way, who knows whether I can keep the appointment. I want to get it over with; and get varicose veins off my mind.  My Big Toe ?? Once again, I’m dipping my big toe into speed development. I don’t have Fizik shoes; but that doesn’t matter. I tried several 30-second attempts to reach 18 mph; but only the last one succeeded, when I had a tailwind. Why 18 mph? The choice was quite arbitrary; but if you want to be able to cruise at X mph, you need to make regular efforts to go a few mph faster than that. So, if I want a cruising speed of 15 mph, it makes sense to try for 18 mph here and there. I didn’t want to do too many efforts, because I planned to add a few miles to my distance. Next month, I want to get back to on-bike force development exercises. I’ve let them go for quite some time; and it’s none too soon to prepare for RAGBRAI hills. I’m still nervous about that! Indoor Pros and Cons

Indoor Pros and Cons ✍? Indoor pros and cons go way beyond PROpel! I know, it’s a bad pun; but at times the weather makes riding outdoors unpleasant or even hazardous. Then we need to consider indoor pros and cons if we’re to ride at all. One big pro of indoor “riding” is that you can keep out of the weather. We’ve had several consecutive days of rain: the slow, steady kind of rain that never seems to stop. It looks like this pattern of stormy weather will persist at least until the middle of next week; and forecasts keep predicting heavy rain and even T-storms. I was tired of pedaling the hybrid round and round the local park; and I missed real riding! Another pro of riding indoors is that you can do it almost anytime; and your bicycle stays clean when road conditions are mucky. I, for one, am not crazy about cleaning things! The Downside ? Indoor pros and cons, naturally, include the downside of “riding” inside. One of the cons is that it’s easy to get overheated. When you’re doing a regular outdoor ride, your own motion generates a certain amount of breeze; but if your bicycle is hooked into a trainer, you don’t have that. Today I finally set up the road bike in the trainer. I couldn’t  know when it might begin to storm, after all. I set the window unit on Cool; put a fan on the seat of a chair so that it pointed right at me; and draped my cooling towel around my neck. In spite of these measures, I still got quite hot while pedaling. Another con of indoor riding is that my Garmin doesn’t provide the usual data, because the bicycle’s front wheel is stationary. I could watch my heart rate; but that was all. So I had to guess at my mileage. I tried to do that by imagining where I would be after 10, 20, or more minutes of riding on the levee. Even that might not be very accurate. Judging by my heart rate, I wasn’t riding as vigorously as I would have on the bike path. Therefore I probably didn’t go as far. Maybe I’ll take my old poncho and cut it to hip length. Then it won’t flap like crazy, and I can go for a real ride — rain or not.
