The weather is nasty this morning, to be sure. At around 7:30 am, my cell phone chimed with a flash flood warning. We’ve also got a wind advisory and a tornado🌪️ watch! Shortly after 8:00 am, I began to hear thunder. It was already raining; and the rain was getting heavier. Not the best circumstances for going out on a bike; so I’m glad I don’t have to go anywhere. Or think up a paraphrase when I forget my lines! Safe Places 🏠 Speaking of tornadoes and flash floods, I hope we all have safe places. Even if I can’t do an indoor ride, I can keep dry; and I don’t have to worry about getting struck by lightning.  A big problem with “riding” in the trainer is, I can’t use my hybrid. It has bigger tires than the old one did; and every time I’ve tried to hook it into the trainer, I’ve knocked the wheel off the bike! I actually prefer a hybrid for riding in the trainer, because it has a handlebar-mounted bottle cage; and I don’t need to reach past my pedaling leg for the water bottle.  What if you’re out for a ride, and miles from home, when weather like this catches up to you? It can be hard to find safe places then, depending on your habitual route. I feel like all I can do is keep going; and hope for the best. Hotheaded 🔥 I got a little hotheaded this morning — literally! When I began my ride, the temperature was in the low 70s; and for me that’s a bit too cool not to use a helmet liner. Well, I have two such liners; one heavyish, and the other one lighter weight. I wanted the lighter skull cap; and couldn’t find it. I didn’t want to delay my ride; so I wore the heavyish liner. Of course I got rather hotheaded; and leg warmers were a bit too warm before I got back home. I wore them because I thought the wind would make me too chilly otherwise. Speaking of wind, I thought the forecast indicated a wind advisory from 10:00 am today; and actually it’s for tomorrow! Pushing It 😤 I spent some time pushing it today, too. If you want go get fast, you have to work at going fast! It’s not easy, of course. This morning I watched my Garmin’s screen to see how fast I was going; then I worked at pushing for a few mph faster than that. Not for long at a time; only 30-60 seconds. I can lengthen these efforts as time goes on. It really gets my heart rate up; and in fact you need to get into your maximum heart rate range sometimes. Especially if you want to prepare for climbing, and live in pancake-flat territory. As to speed, it doesn’t hurt to get a few mph faster than your desired event pace. You can always slow down once the big ride begins! Another thing I did today was extend my ride by a mile or two. That’s vital if you’ve got, say, RAGBRAI in mind. Many videos that I’ve watched about this event have riders saying their b***s hurt. The more you’re used to riding, the less of a problem that is. So I’ll keep on pushing it. Shady Dealings Again

Shady Dealings Again ▓ We’re getting shady dealings again today. I fact, a double dose! First, there’s the eclipse. We’re outside of the path of totality where I live; but they predicted an 82% coverage. But second, it’s overcast; and that does away with any chances of observing the eclipse. Thus we’ve gotten double shady dealings! In fact, we could have T-storms — yes, shady dealings again — but it looks like we’re luckier than some folks. In addition to missing the eclipse, they’re at risk for severe weather. What a day for storms to come through! 😞 Speaking of Storms ⛈️ Speaking of storms, what’s your coping strategy? Sometimes I think a rain coat would be better than my ancient poncho. The snaps at the sides, meant to keep said poncho from flapping like crazy, long since pulled away from the material. I have to wear my reflective vest over the poncho to keep it halfway in place.  If it’s storming when you have a ride planned, do you ride; or stay in? Here, multiple factors come into play. Is it just raining; or is there lightning? What are the wind conditions? Is there a risk for severe weather? Could you get to shelter quickly if necessary? Are you training up for a major event, such as RAGBRAI? Would skipping a ride upset your training program? If going for a ride outdoors isn’t possible, can you ride inside? At the same time, we need to learn how to cope with riding in the rain! Blockage

Blockage 🚧 Who wants a blockage in the bike path? Doesn’t it drive you crazy? It’s enough to make a body resort to virtual rides! I was out riding this morning; and the bike path was closed a couple of miles short of my intended turnaround point. Goodness knows, that’s not as catastrophic as a blockage in the coronary arteries; but it did mean that I had to turn around early; and I couldn’t make the planned pit stop.  As a result, I don’t think I hydrated quite enough. The wind was a problem, too; and I even caught myself thinking: Do I really want to fight headwinds for hours a day, for seven days straight? I might get that if I did RAGBRAI! New Ride Food 🥨🫘 I tried my new ride food today: Isadora Vegetarian Refried Beans. I didn’t take an entire pouch; that would have been too large and bulky. Instead, I put a serving’s worth into a snack bag; and put that into a larger plastic bag in case of leakage. I also took along half a large wheat-flour tortilla and a plastic spoon. It made a tasty enough snack; but even with a spoon to use, it was rather messy. Refried beans seem to dry my throat, which didn’t help my hydration problem; and with the uncertainty of being able to find a restroom, I didn’t dare drink as much as I really needed. I have a similar problem with pretzels; and it’s actually a long time since I last used them as ride fuel. Maybe I’ll think up a way to make “refritos” moister next time. I don’t have any knee warmers; so I used full-length leg warmers. Be Adaptable

Be Adaptable 🤔 We cyclists learn to be adaptable, whether it’s figuring out how to transport a child by bicycle; or adjusting our clothing for capricious weather. We also have to be adaptable when it comes to each ride. This morning my left knee was twinging on the outside edge whenever I rode over a rise in the path. I have no idea what the cause was; but going to and from the salvage store, I needed to stay on the small ring most of the time. I also omitted the usual climb up the vehicular access road to the top of the levee during the ride home!  The knee felt better after four miles of easy riding; but I figured it was wise to keep on taking it easy. These things just happen; and aren’t always anything to be concerned about. It’s part of being a cyclist; and it’s likely to fade away in another day or two. If it doesn’t, of course I can consult the doctor! But What If… 😰 But what if something like that crops up during a multi-day event? I guess you could pack along some Voltaren Gel, or something similar; just in case. This is why training up is important; it’s not just getting ready for the miles. You need to be adaptable to varying terrain; and unaccustomed climbing can be hard on the knees. Not to mention that it’s tough on your quads! Guess why I’m doing on-bike exercises that simulate hills? Even if I wait until next year to shoot for RAGBRAI, it’s not too early to start training! Smorgasbord

Smorgasbord 🫘 🍌 🍫 We cyclists nowadays have quite a smorgasbord of on-bike food available. It’s great to have so many things to try; from cookbook recipes to salvage-store finds. As to the latter, I’ve got to use up my overstock! For some years, my cycling smorgasbord has consisted of various protein/energy bars and GU-Gels. I’ve used Clif Bars; RXBars; and many others. Now, however, I’m getting interested in expanding the menu. At least one video about  RAGBRAI mentioned frijoles and tortillas; and now I’m eager to try it. For the first experiment, I’ll make it only part of my ride food. I don’t really expect it to cause stomach issues; but it’s better to ease into a new food regimen.  I’m also considering fruit pouches. GoGo squeeZ comes in handy, recloseable pouches; and that’s handy when you don’t want to eat an entire serving at once. Taste of RAGBRAI? 👅 Did I get a taste of RAGBRAI this afternoon? And I don’t mean electrolyte drink. It was at least 2:00 pm when I decided to head out to a bicycle shop — not my usual one, which is within a mile of home. This one is more like 2.5 miles away; and I was riding in the blazing sunshine. The temperature was a relatively cool 75 degrees; and even that felt quite hot. If that was a taste of RAGBRAI, I’ve got a long way to go before I’m ready! Why did I go out on a bicycle at that hour? I’m looking for a pair of light-ish Winter cycling gloves; something lighter than Giro Candela 2.0 Gloves. Last time I was at my usual bike shop, they didn’t have any; and neither did the shop I visited today. I may not need them until Fall; but I figured they might be on sale now. The Power of Suggestion

The Power of Suggestion 💡 Is anyone immune to the power of suggestion? I’m certainly not! Taking refried beans along as ride food never occurred to me; but after watching this video (17:13), I decided that I’ll give it a try. Think outside of the box, they say! I do think, however, that I’ll have to wait for refried beans and tortilla chips until I’m taking a break from pedaling; and I hope I can devise a leak-proof way to package the beans. The packets shown are quite large (15.2 oz each); and my road bike‘s top tube pouch isn’t big enough for one. And how do I transport tortilla chips (or corn chips) so that they don’t get crushed? I hope I can find some power of suggestion that will suggest a solution! Still Lingering 🐌 With thoughts of a future RAGBRAI still lingering in my mind, I’m looking for on-bike fuel besides bars. I’ll need foods that don’t require refrigeration; and preferably in packs small enough that I don’t end up discarding half of the package! Camp cooking on RAGBRAI? Not likely, at least for me; and buying all my food all week might get very costly. Now is the time to try things like refried beans and squeeze-packs of fruit (e.g. applesauce) to be sure they won’t cause GI issues. If I’m considering RAGBRAI 2025, I’ve got plenty of time to work out these things; and to continue training up. Actually, so far, my weekly mileages are keeping pace; but I’m not sure my “hill practice” is! I wouldn’t want to go into RAGBRAI with the thought still lingering: I should’ve trained better! Bare Legs

Bare Legs 🦵🏼 Yesterday I thought the season for bare legs had arrived. I thought I could ride from now on without needing to use embrocation cream; or to wear leg warmers. After all, at 7:00 am yesterday the temperature was already 74 degrees! Mother Nature sure can fool you. Last night there was quite a change; and this morning it was some 20 degrees cooler than it was yesterday. On top of that, it was windy; and I decided to ride in the park. I did a rather long ride yesterday; and wanted to go shorter and easier today. But no bare legs! It’s not warm enough for that if the temperature isn’t at least 70 degrees; and if there’s a wind, that makes it colder. Then I have to pull out those leg warmers! Spring? 🌺 So is it Spring? Maybe we can determine that by watching for kids on scooters; but our Spring season is usually fleeting. All too often, we seem to plunge directly  from Winter into miserably hot and humid Summer! I  often wish I lived where there are four distinct seasons. Increasingly long rides should let me enjoy Spring while we have it; and I wish the return to hot weather were more gradual. It would give me a little more time to adjust to it while I push for longer and longer rides.  Tonight it’s going to fall below 50 degrees; so no bare legs tomorrow. That sure doesn’t feel like Spring! Fuel Supply

Fuel Supply ⛽️ What’s your favorite fuel supply for long rides? I like Gatorade Whey Protein Bars; but the catch with them is, the chocolate coating can get very messy! If I can’t lick it all off my fingers, I end up wiping my fingers all over my shorts. A good fuel supply is very important. From what I’ve read, once you attain a certain fitness level, you can pedal pretty much endlessly as long as you’ve got a steady supply of fuel.  What fitness level does that mean; and how do  you know when you’ve reached it? If you’ll be doing a multi-day event, what kind of fuel will you find along the way? RAGBRAI Fuel 🌽 How about RAGBRAI fuel? The videos I’ve watched about the event report on the food along the way. Mr. Pork Chop shows up often in these videos. I don’t know how big those pork chops are; and would that chop sit too heavily in my stomach if I ate the whole thing? Maybe I could take along plastic sandwich bags; and save part of my pork chop for later? If I did that, would the leftovers keep? I don’t need to get food poisoning if they don’t! Of course there’s corn on the cob; Iowa is famous for corn. They talk about all the home-made pie; ice cream; beer (I’ll skip that part!); pancakes; and more! I think I’d do much better eating a bite every 15 minutes than riding for an hour; eating a lot; then starting to ride again. What I’ve read about one-day century rides actually cautions against that! And doing it for seven days straight? I think I’d rather have my RAGBRAI fuel slow and steady. How Corny!

How Corny! 🌽 How corny can I get? I ate corn on the cob for breakfast today! For some reason I’ve had a hankering after it; and this morning I rode to the supermarket and got some. But I didn’t get peppercorns! Today I’m trying to take it easy. I think this week I need to pull back a little; or at least omit the force-development work. Everything I’ve read about training says, take every fourth week off from intense work for riders under 40 years of age; and every third week if you’re older. Which, alas, I am.🙄 As a matter of fact, I seem to have overdone something yesterday. My right calf is prone to cramping today; and I’d say it’s time to pull out the foam roller. Not that I did an excessively long ride; jumping up to 50 miles right now is — how corny! Or maybe plain foolish. Bit by Bit 🧩 I’ve just got to take it bit by bit, whether I’m trying to work up to a century; or to get fast. As a matter of fact, I hope that doing some hard efforts once or twice a week (except for “off” weeks, of course) will improve my pace. It would be nice to finish a century in seven hours, instead of almost eight hours! It’s the same with trying to shed extra pounds. Take it bit by bit; and unless it’s medically necessary, don’t throw all your old favorite foods overboard at once. That’s bound to backfire into binges. I know — if I try to cut out all sweets, sooner or later I relapse into devouring all the candy, ice cream, etc. I can get my hands on. Thinking of doing 18-20 miles tomorrow. I hope the wind won’t be too bad; but if it is, I’d better not try to fight it too hard. I’ll get home bit by bit!
