An undertaking like RAGBRAI requires considerable thought and planning. Will you carry all your own gear; or will you use a charter service? How will you get to Iowa in the first place?

Leave yourself plenty of time for this. A year for planning your RAGBRAI adventure isn’t too long! Watch videos posted by riders who have participated in RAGBRAI. Some of them have done RAGBRAI numerous times; and they have good suggestions. If you can speak in person with these folks, so much the better!

At some point, while viewing all those YouTubes, I began to get RAGBRAI thoughts. It’s a good thing I started thinking so early; there was a LOT to think about!

The more I thought, though, the more wonderful RAGBRAI seemed. Riding every day; beautiful countryside; friendly folks; marvelous food to try.

Of course, fueling during RAGBRAI is one of the big issues. When you ride a bicycle for hours a day, you need plenty of food; but without overdoing it.  And don’t forget hydration!

A major consideration for RAGBRAI is dealing with the heat; and I don’t mean curry! July in Iowa can be very hot, and humid as well; so plan ways to keep cool!

As a retiree, RAGBRAI for older folks was also on my mind. But I wasn’t too worried about it; one video that I watched showed a gentleman in his nineties who was doing the route!

Towards the end of 2024, I was still a little uncertain about RAGBAI 2025; but I had begun to buy things that I’d need if I did do the big ride. Not everything at once; but I wanted to start my prep!
