Rain gear is a must for most of us cyclists. I know it is here in New Orleans, where we average 60 inches of rainfall per year.
A poncho can keep the worst of the rain off; but it can get very hot under there! But on a cold, wet ride, a rain suit helps you stay both dry and warm.
Getting caught in the rain with no rain gear is part of being a cyclist; and I’d say that your first such ride is a rite of passage!
