Bicycle touring can mean lots of things. It might be a single day of exploring a city on two wheels; or, it might be one of Adventure Cycling‘s epic tours. Such tours can last up to three months! I myself have yet to go on a bicycle tour; but for folks who are more gung-ho, here’s some useful info.
How did I start thinking about bicycle touring? A program I use lets me see where the visitors to this website are located; and when a state or country showed up, I would post a blog about bicycle touring there. It’s my way of saying, “Thank you for visiting!” Here are those blogs, all brought together.
There are bicycle touring possibilities in all 50 states; Washington, D.C.; and Canada. And abroad, of course. Get that passport ready!
All Over the Map: USA & Canada
Every state has its share of bicycling tours. Choose according to your tolerance for climbing; temperature extremes; and so on.
If you enjoy a party extending over several days, how about riding Down on the Bayou? Especially if you also enjoy riding on flat ground.
If you don’t mind getting dirty, head for Kansas and the Dirty Kanza.
Of course, be sure you have the necessary equipment: the right kind of bicycle; panniers; and so on. And train up before the trip; the better your fitness, the more the more enjoyable the tour.
Globetrotting: Bicycle Touring Abroad
If yours is an adventurous spirit, there are plenty of possibilities for bicycle touring abroad. Africa; Asia; Europe; etcetera — dozens of countries, on all continents except Antarctica! These range from the flat lands of the Netherlands; to Andorra in the Pyrenees; to riding on the Equator.
It seems to me that getting over there would take some doing; not the least of which is transporting your bicycle. Depending on where you’re going, you may need certain vaccinations. How about language barriers? And so forth. It would take lots of planning; but if that’s what you like, go for it!,
Bike packing: Carrying your stuff with you!
Bike packing has many meanings. It can be a one-day jaunt to the local park, with just a few items in a handlebar bag. At the opposite end of the spectrum, it can mean taking months to tour the entire planet on two wheels!
