Just looking at all that snow is enough to make me reach for warm clothing!

Here is soft-cold; or, clothing for rides in the cold.
When it’s cold outside; but you can’t stomach the idea of long indoor sessions in the trainer; what do you do?
Answer: layering. That can be tricky, especially if the temperature is prone to wild fluctuations from day to day. It’s even harder if there are likely to be wild temperature swings during the day. Well, let’s get started on cold-weather gear.
Undershirt. Jersey. Vest. (In my case, and old cycling jacket without the sleeves). And, of course, a jacket.
Another must for cold-day riding is a helmet liner; or skull cap, as I call it. Most bicycle helmets are well ventilated. When the mercury drops, all that ventilation isn’t so great; especially if it’s windy as well as cold. A skull cap keeps my head and ears a lot more comfortable; and prevents cold-induced headaches. Unfortunately it doesn’t keep my nose from running like crazy!
Gloves. I hardly need say that full-fingered gloves keep my hands from going numb on a cold day. Full-fingered gloves come in varying weights for various conditions. Where I live, it seldom gets cold enough for long enough periods for me to want Rabbitroom gloves; but if I move up North, I may well put them on my wish list!
That takes care of “upstairs”. Regular cycling shorts are fine; but when it gets cold, few of us want to ride bare-legged. Leg warmers are a big help; and are easy to remove if you get too warm during your ride.
To keep your toes warm, thermal socks ought to help. OUGHT to. When it starts to drop below 45 or even below 50, I find that merino socks over regular socks still aren’t enough!
