“Softwear” is the clothing aspect of cycling. I wouldn’t say that cycling-specific clothing is absolutely necessary, but it you ride a lot, it’s more comfortable.
Let’s start with soft-warm, for rides in warm weather. That’s when a good pair of shorts keeps you much more comfortable. Cycling shorts fit snugly to prevent chafing; and the built-in chamois protects your “sensitive parts”.
Cycling gloves come both in half-fingered and full-fingered models. There’s even a “lobster” style for very cold weather. The half-fingered style is for warm-weather riding. Gloves protect your hands from chafing, calluses, and blisters. During long rides on a hot day, gloves keep your sweaty hands from slipping. Ditto for rides on a rainy day.
I didn’t buy my first cycling jersey until I’d been riding the tricycle for over two years. It was my reward to myself for completing my first century. See here for a guide to correct sizing for jerseys.
Next step, so to speak, bike shoes. Since I’m a recreational rider, not a racer, I’ve always used mountain bike shoes. They have recessed cleats, making walking easier than in road bike shoes. I tried on “roadie” shoes in the bike shop once; and it was like trying to walk on ice!
There’s a lot more; but shorts, jersey, gloves, and shoes are the basics. You can build your cycling wardrobe from there, according to needs and budget.
