Your tastes might be more adventurous than mine. If so, maybe a mountain bike (MTB) is for you. They’re meant for off-road use; and in fact, mountain biking can get you into some pretty rough territory. All that bouncing over uneven ground; rocks; and so on can give your body quite a battering.

Suspension can help keep the ride from giving you such a beating, leaving you less worn out post-ride. MTBs can be had in either “hardtail” or “dualie” models. A hardtail has front suspension only; a dualie has suspension both in front and in the rear.

Personally I have no experience with mountain bikes, and can’t offer any advice of my own. This video may be helpful.

MTBs can, of course, be ridden on the road. They say that those knobby tires take a lot of extra effort when riding on-road; so if you want to ride your MTB over paved surfaces, you might want to switch to smoother tires.

I suppose that Cyclocross is a close cousin to mountain biking. It sounds like it’s not for the faint-hearted. It involves sections too steep and/or rough to be ridden over, where the rider must dismount and carry the bicycle. If you enjoy incorporating cycling and weight lifting, cyclocross might be right up your alley.

cyclocross bicycle doesn’t seem to be exactly the same as a road bike. The bicycle must be lightweight because of the need to sometimes carry it over obstacles; but since cyclocross events are partly off-road, the bike must be able to use knobby, MTB-type tires.
