I’m not sure I’d ever say that this or that bar is the best; bar none. There are so many of them that are suitable for ride food. They might not be fine dining; but for on-bike nutrition, that’s not necessary. Over the years, I’ve tried many different kinds of bars; and naturally the results have varied:
RXBars taste good, but to me they’re a bit too tough and chewy for ride food; and they also have an annoying way of sticking to my teeth. But I do like to try the many different flavors.
At one time I regularly used Clif Bars as ride food; but they’ve fallen by the wayside. Clif Bars are low in protein; and a nutritionist advised me to look for bars with at least 8- 12 grams of protein.
Clif Builder’s bars are quite dense. I save them for longer rides — say, 30 miles or more. That’s when I really need the protein to keep my muscles going. This is one of the products I watch for when I visit the salvage store.
Kind Bars taste good, too; but that chocolate coating on the bottom can get very messy! They’re better for rides on cool days; especially when it is not sunny. In addition, they’re low in protein.
I’ve also tried FitCrunch bars. I used to find a Birthday Cake flavor at the salvage store; but it’s a long time since I’ve seen any. What a pity; I liked that one very much!
